Let’s Pretend This Never Happened (book review)

Oh. My. Word.

I recently read Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson (The Bloggess) as part of BlogHer’s book club.

I don’t even know where to start in telling you about this book. Well, let’s start here– it is HYSTERICAL. Really and truly. I don’t use that word lightly. This book is crack-you-up, spit-your-drink, wild-belly-laugh kind of funny.

It is also crass. Lawson’s language is a bit more, how shall I say, colorful than my own. I’m pretty sure that she dropped the f-bomb more times in the first chapter than I typically hear in a month.

I’m not a particularly delicate flower about such things, however, so I was able to overlook it given how utterly funny her writing is. Basically, I just had to make sure that my eagle-eyed second grader wasn’t anywhere in the vicinity to catch sight of what I was reading.

Described by Lawson as a “mostly true memoir,” this book is a collection of stories and moments that are jaw-droppingly crazy and amusing. Even when recounting things which, by all counts, should be devastating topics, Lawson has a miraculous ability to see the humor and make us see it too. That’s a real gift, in my opinion.

As a blogger, reading this book also made me nod my head emphatically when she described the relationships between those of us who choose to write this way. There’s a kinship there that is so hard to describe, but it is REAL and it is AMAZING. She captures this in such a powerful way, I admit I folded a few corners down. (Sorry! Defacing books here!)

I truly enjoyed reading this one and I loved the fact that it cracked me up. Laughing feels awesome, doesn’t it?

What’s the last thing that cracked YOU up? (And, also, have any of you read this book?)

This is a paid review for BlogHer Book Club but the opinions expressed are my own.
