Parents Magazine Announces Top 10 Children’s Hospitals for Preemie Care 2013

Drumroll, please!

I feel like it hasn’t been too long since I shared the latest US NICU rankings with you all, but that’s probably because I was slacking last time. ;)

The new findings by Parents magazine have been released and I’ve got ‘em for you. Our beloved Riley is back on the list, coming in at #4.

The northern midwest has a strong presence on this list, but, again, these NICUs are scattered all over the nation and I do think that’s good news.

Here you go–

1. Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Milwaukee

“…it has one of the best return rates of any hospital inParents’¬†survey: About half of the children who are at high risk for developmental delays such as learning disabilities or impaired speech come back to the hospital for evaluation — and, if necessary, a treatment plan.”

2. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

“It spends nearly $8 million a year just on neonatology research and published 56 studies in the field in 2011 alone…”

3. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center

“In 2012, the hospital was the first in the world to install an MRI scanner in a NICU…”

4. Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health, Indianapolis

“…the neonatology team at Riley Hospital for Children is studying how to get babies off ventilators and breathing on their own as well as how to optimally cool newborns with moderate to severe brain injury to reduce the risk of developmental problems down the road…”

5. UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, Cleveland

“The hospital established the first comprehensive, long-term follow-up study to evaluate how well babies with extremely low birthweight develop into adulthood, and it provided the concepts behind parent-infant bonding and its positive impact on newborns.”

6. Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus

“…its NICU boasts a tremendous 78 percent survival rate for babies born between 22 and 27 weeks’ gestation…”

7. Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Detroit

“Children’s Hospital of Michigan is one of a few hospitals worldwide with a MicroPET scanner, which allows for screening of newborns…”

8. Monroe Carroll Jr. Hospital at Vanderbilt, Nashville

“It offers comfort and privacy….Monroe Carroll Jr. Hospital at Vanderbilt offers 35 rooms with an adult bed and a private bathroom so parents can comfortably stay with their sick newborn.”

9. Boston Children’s Hospital

“The hospital is researching stem-cell therapies to treat pulmonary hypertension and bronchopulmonary dysplasia, two common conditions in preemies.”

10. St. Louis Children-s Hospital — Washington University

“It uses new technology to understand how germs that babies acquire in their intestines after birth impact their risk of serious intestinal and lung complications…”

Feel free to talk up your beloved hospitals in the comments! These round-ups are never include all the amazing facilities out there but, as I always say, it is typically a good indication that these ten hospitals are doing a great job. Keep up the good work!
