Birthday Oatmeal


As you all must know by now, I adore oatmeal. Well, actually, I eat MY oats in granola form most frequently, but my kiddos? Oatmeal lovers. And I feel good giving it to them!

Anyway, though the majority of my oatmeal recipes do not contain artificial colors, I am more than willing to make an exception in the case of birthdays. This fun, lightly-sweetened version is reminiscent of vanilla icing and topped with the birthday kiddo’s favorite colors.


Birthday Oatmeal

(for each serving)

  • 1/2 cup quick oats
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 tablespoon powdered sugar (or up to 1 full tablespoon if you like things sweeter)
  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • 1/8 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract
  • sprinkles!


Stir together all ingredients except sprinkles. Allow to sit for a few minutes, until thickened. Scatter sprinkles on the top.

(This recipe could easily be adapted with Christmas sprinkles or any holiday colors, really.)
