Won’t Back Down: Why Advocacy Matters (review & giveaway)

Let me just start out by telling you I am not a fan of movies. Honestly, I just don’t have the patience to sit still for that long, typically. I used to do better when the average movie was about an hour and a half, but, now that films are often two or, God help me, 3+ hours long, I just cannot do it. I get fidgety.

Very rarely, a movie comes along that I can’t wait to see. Very rarely. As in, the last time this happened was over a year ago. But, I’ve got to tell you all… I really, really WANT to see “Won’t Back Down.” (Go– watch the trailer right here. Seriously. I’ll wait.)

Starring a cast chock-full of Oscar nominees and winners (Maggie Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Rosie Perez and Holly Hunter), “Won’t Back Down” tells the story of two determined mothers, one a teacher, who will stop at nothing to transform their children’s failing inner city school. Facing a powerful and entrenched bureaucracy, they risk everything to make a difference in the education and future of their children.

I am passionate about children and education. So very, very blessed to live in an amazing school district, I’ve still had to fight hard to advocate for my children. I’m parenting a “severely gifted” child and another born four months early who will likely have special needs for quite some time.

It’s so critical that they both know that we, their parents, will respectfully fight with all the determination it takes to get them the very best education they can have. It is important to me that they learn to speak up for those issues worth fighting for!

I am so inspired by the strength and conviction portrayed in this movie– it gives me hope that we can – and should - expect more for the children in our country. The film comes out on September 28th, and while it’s unlikely I’ll make it the very first day, I really, really hope to get the chance to see it. I have a feeling my mom and sister would enjoy sniffling through this one with me.
