Too Lazy to Tend Bar (Michelob ULTRA Light Cider review)

It’s no secret around here that my husband and I occasionally enjoy a nice adult beverage together in the evenings. It’s a nice way to unwind together and catch up after the kids are tucked all snug in their beds. I have a seemingly endless repertoire of drink recipes tucked away in this noggin of mine and, since I’m the one who actually held a job tending bar (and also because I’m pickier), the job of mixing the drinks tends to fall on me.   And I’m okay with that. I rather enjoy making a nice cocktail. But, here’s the thing… sometimes I just don’t feel like doing the work. I know, I know, it’s not a great hardship to get out some bottles, ice, glasses, straws, garnishes… well, yeah, see? It kind of is. But, as I mentioned earlier, I’m sort of too picky to let my husband play amateur mixologist.   Every once in awhile I like a drink that requires no mixing. One that I know my husband can’t mess up. ;)

We go hiking just about every weekend and, a couple weeks ago, we had done a particularly long, grueling trek. It was fun, but my legs were screaming by that evening. It was hot, we were tired, and we just wanted to relax. I? Did not feel like playing bartender, but I was very much in the mood for something cold, refreshing, and, mmm hmm, adult.   Seemed like the perfect time to try Michelob ULTRA Light Cider.

The last time I’d had any kind of malt cider beverage would have to be back in college at a graduation party. I don’t recall the brand, but I do remember finding it incredibly sweet and almost “thick.” So… not exactly my favorite drink memory. I’m also not a beer drinker. You might surmise at this point that I didn’t hold out high hopes for Michelob ULTRA Light Cider.   You would be correct.   I am happy to report, however, that I was pleasantly surprised! Not only was my husband able to make the drinks all by himself (tee hee), but I was happy to realize this was NOT the heavy, sweet cider I’d had in the past. Michelob ULTRA Light Cider is a light, crisp, not-too-sweet refreshment. Happy day!

We are the lazy sorts (particularly after a full day of hiking), so we were happy to enjoy ours straight out of the bottle, but I can also imagine Michelob ULTRA Light Cider being tasty (and pretty) served in a fun glass over plenty of ice. The “light” in the name describes both the texture (hooray!) and also the calorie count. Coming in at 120 calories, Michelob ULTRA Light Cider has one third fewer calories than traditional hard ciders. I’m not a calorie counter, but I guess it’s good that I’m not undoing all that good burn I got from my mountain trek, eh? More important to me was the fact that it’s made from hand-picked apples and THAT’S where the sweetness comes from. I appreciate a remarkably un-scary ingredient list.

Will it replace my mad mixing skillz? Of course not. My blender will still get a workout. I’m also not giving up on wine. But, I am happy to report, my perception of hard cider beverages has been forever altered… and in a very good way.
