Chocolate Strawberry Breakfast Puree

I was going to call this a smoothie… but it has no milk.  Or yogurt.  I mean, it could!  Feel fee to add either or both of them to this concoction, but, for me, it’s great just as is!

 

I mentioned a week or so ago that I’m making a concerted effort to blend up some frozen fruit in the mornings so that I meet my body’s “fruit needs.”  I adore lots of veggies, but I often just forget about fruit.  This enables me to check it off my list first thing and get off to a pretty healthy start!

 

This version’s indulgent, yes, but since you make your own chocolate syrup you do avoid HFCS or any wacky fillers.  So that’s something, right?

 

Here goes.  Start by making the chocolate sauce.  Combine

  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup water

in a small sauce pan.  Heat over medium heat until sugar dissolves, all ingredients combine well, and it just starts to bubble.  Remove from heat, allow to cool, and pour into a small jar for storage.

Now, let’s make something fun and fancy for breakfast!

 

Pour a cup or so of frozen strawberries into blender.  Drizzle 1 – 2 tablespoons of the chocolate sauce over the top.  Slowly add in 1/2 to 1 cup of cold water (I’m sure milk would work– I just haven’t tried it yet!) and blend until desired thickness and consistency.

 

Feel free to garnish it all pretty or just stick a straw in it and enjoy, like I do!

  • Yum and so simple too! I have the hardest time getting myself to eat breakfast. I always drink tea or hot chocolate in the morning and then wait until lunch to have food. I also find that I’m more likely eat to fruit than veggies for a snack so I need to start eating more veggies – just the opposite of you.

    • Smoothies or shakes would probably work well as a “breakfast transition” food for you. Since you just drink them, it’s not a big production. :) Lots of people make “green smoothies” but I’ve not tried that yet… I love my spinach so many other ways!
